One arrested, another wanted for questioning after fatal shooting in Evans last week

Columbia County authorities arrested an Augusta man Wednesday and are looking for another in connection with last week’s fatal shooting in Evans.

Benjamin McKie Jr., 46, of the 3600 block of Meadowgrove Drive, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and giving false statements, sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said.

McKie is being held at the Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

The shooting occurred Friday in the 600 block of Blanchard Road.

Patrick Smith, 33, died Saturday at Medical College of Georgia Hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and pelvis, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said Monday.

Resident Philip Marshall, 44, was shot in the back during the same incident, but survived, Morris said.

Wanted for questioning by officers is Reggie Demond Bennett, 27, who lived at the Blanchard Road home. He has also stayed at residences on Cobb Road, Tubman Road and King Villa.

Bennett, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, drives a 2002 black Chevrolet Monte Carlo. People are urged to use caution around Bennett, who is a convicted felon and known to carry firearms, police said.

On Friday, Smith was found passed out in the driver’s seat of a GMC Suburban on the side of Blanchard Road. An unloaded 9 mm handgun was found on the passenger seat of the SUV.

Morris said Wednesday that another gun also was recovered at the scene.

A fight between Smith and Marshall led to the shooting, Morris said, but further details on what started the altercation have not been released. Marshall has not been charged in the shooting.

“This investigation is fluid,” Morris said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Columbia County sheriff’s Investigator Ron Van Vactor at (706) 541-2800.
