Man attacked outside Augusta grocery store

A man was wounded in the back of the head during an attack outside Paul’s IGA, at East Boundary and Greene Street, shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said.

Although initially reported as a shooting, investigators now are unsure whether the man was shot or beaten, possibly a baseball bat. His head is too swollen to allow a conclusive determination, authorities said.

The man, who appeared to be in his mid-20s to early 30s, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, and a condition wasn’t immediately available.

Anyone with information on the incident should call the Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1080.
