Wife found at convenience store after being shot by husband, Burke County sheriff says

Tom Willie Gibbons is accused of shooting his estranged wife, Sherita Shaye Gibbons, on Thursday night at their Burke County home.

A husband shot his wife at their Burke County home then drove her to Richmond County, where she was found at a convenience store Thursday evening, Burke County Sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Lowe said.

Sherita Shaye Gibbons, 30, was found around 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Circle K on Tobacco Road after her estranged husband, Tom Willie Gibbons, 38, shot her three times, Lowe said.

Tom Gibbons is in custody in Burke County after he turned himself in to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and was transferred.

Lowe said Gibbons shot his wife then started to drive her to a hospital in Augusta. At some point, she got out of the car and walked to the Circle K parking lot, where she passed out.

Bystanders called 911, and she was airlifted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where she is stable in critical condition.

It was not clear whether she had gotten out of the car on her own or was forced to get out, Lowe said.

The shooting took place in the back bedroom of their residence on the 100 block of Northview Drive in Waynesboro. Sherita Gibbons was grazed in the neck and chest and received a wound to the hip. The car and weapon are in police custody, Lowe said.

Dispatch received a call around 6:15 p.m. Thursday that they believe was Sherita Gibbons. They could hear yelling in the background.

Tom Gibbons faces multiple charges including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Lowe said.
