Aiken slaying suspect remains in hospital

19-year-old not expected to be released from care soon
Stephon Carter, 19, has been hospitalized since a gunbattle.

Stephon Carter, the man suspected in the Dec. 20 slaying of Aiken Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson, will not be released soon from care at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Richmond County authorities said Friday.

Sheriff’s Maj. Gene Johnson said he checked with hospital officials and was told not to expect custody of Carter this weekend.

Police said Carter, 19, has been hospitalized since he was wounded in a gunbattle with Aiken Department of Public Safety officers after he was stopped in a car on Brandt Court. Police said Carter fired at least two shots, killing Richardson and hitting Officer Travis Griffin in the chest.

Johnson said that when Carter becomes able, he will go before a judge in Richmond County to determine whether he will fight extradition to South Carolina to face charges of murder and attempted murder.

Richmond County Chief Magistrate Judge William Jennings III said that in most cases defendants waive their right to a formal extradition proceeding, which simplifies the process of transferring prisoners to other states. Should Carter request formal extradition, however, South Carolina authorities will have 30 days to seek a request from the governor’s office to extradite him from Georgia.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson said she had no information about when Carter would be released from the hospital.
