Augusta man arrested in Wednesday shooting at Cherry Tree Crossing

Authorities have charged an Augusta man in a shooting Wednesday morning that injured someone at Cherry Tree Crossing.

Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said that George Arnold Lyons, 42, is jailed in connection with the shooting, reported at 9:46 a.m. in the 1600 block of Bleakley Street.

Lyons, of the 2800 block of Ann Street, is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a jail booking report.

The extent of the victim’s injuries wasn’t immediately available.

Strength had no additional information about the incident.

Lyons previously served about six years in prison on a 1996 Richmond County charge of theft by taking, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The incident at the Augusta Housing Authority development was the fourth shooting in Augusta in less than 24 hours.

Deputies continue to pursue leads in Tuesday’s shooting of three people, including a toddler, at a house in the 1200 block of Dugas Street.

Investigators said that two masked men entered the house around 2:40 p.m., shouting and shooting Nathan Johnson III and Shaneshia Smith, both 27, and the 17-month-old child.

Sgt. James Kelly said all three victims remained hospitalized Wednesday and were stable.
