An inmate at Augusta Youth Development Campus died Tuesday from injuries sustained Monday, according to media reports.
No details were provided about the incident that occurred about 9 p.m. Monday. The victim was taken to a hospital, but Department of Juvenile Justice spokeswoman Emily Gest did not say which one, nor did she identify the inmate.
WFXG-TV and WRDW-TV reported that the inmate was 19-year-old Jade Holder from Sylvester, Ga. His mother, Evangeline Holder, told WFXG that Jade was pronounced dead around 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten told WRDW that Holder died from his injuries at a local hospital Tuesday.
Calls by The Augusta Chronicle to Tuten were not immediately returned Tuesday night.
Gest said the commissioner has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation look into the incident to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
A statement from the department says: “Should there be any evidence of staff or youth misconduct or criminal activity, DJJ will take all appropriate measures, including referrals for criminal prosecution. Additional precautionary measures are being used to ensure the safety for the youth and staff.”
Mike Ayers, the GBI’s special agent in charge for this region, declined to comment Tuesday evening.
