Man charged in connection with assault of driver in fatal car accident

A man accused of badly beating a woman who was the driver of a car that struck and killed his child was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated battery.

The victim, Tuowana Staten, was driving home on Boykin Road on June 6 when the 2-year-old boy, James Wright IV, chased a football into the street outside his home, investigators say.

Staten swerved but struck the boy, who died three days later in the intensive care ward at Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Staten was not charged in connection with the death.

The boy's father, James Wright III, rushed to the driver's side door after the accident and pulled Staten out of the car, saying that she had killed his child and that he was going to kill her, according to the report.

Wright punched Staten in the face and kicked her as she lay in the roadway, a report states. Staten told deputies the beating continued until family members pulled Wright away.

Staten was taken to the hospital where a deputy observed her injuries included cuts to the face, broken fingernails, loose teeth and scrapes on her ankle.

Jail records show Wright, 26, of the 2400 block of Boykin Road, was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated battery.
