Ex-Richmond County Commissioner sentenced for shoplifting from pharmacy

Bill Hiers

A former Richmond County Commission member has been sentenced to nearly three weeks in jail after shoplifting makeup and medicine from a pharmacy on Christmas Eve.

Paul William “Bill” Hiers, 69, was sentenced Monday, June 2, to 20 days in the Columbia County jail.

CVS employees at 3527 Old Petersburg Road witnessed Hiers putting CoverGirl makeup and a bottle of Aleve into his pants pockets before trying to leave the store, according to an incident report.

Hiers later told police he didn’t want to stand in the long line so he decided not to pay. A woman with Hiers told police she handed him the items but was not aware he intended to steal the merchandise.

Hiers spent several hours in jail that day.

He served on the pre-consolidation Richmond County Commission from 1979-82 and was chairman in 1980.
