Aiken man jailed after woman attacked

An Aiken man is charged with attempted murder after he attacked a woman July 12 on Newberry Street, according to an Aiken Public Safety news release.

Derek Randolph Brooks, 38, of Wrens Place, was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center on Monday, also on charges of kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.

According to warrants, Brooks is accused of hitting the woman in the head and face, causing extensive facial trauma. During the assault, police reports say, he committed sexual battery to her intimate parts. He is also accused of abducting and confining her by physical force. Police said he left the woman incapacitated and unconscious in a secluded area near the intersection of Newberry Street and Park Avenue.

The woman told police she had been walking from a downtown bar shortly before 3 a.m. when the attack occurred.
