Eighth annual Dessert Auction will benefit The Lydia Project

Michele Canchola remembers a woman who was receiving chemotherapy on Mondays last summer.

“She was coming back to the lobby Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday because it was so horribly hot, and she didn’t have air conditioning,” said Canchola, the executive director of The Lydia Project. “You can’t be so sick from chemo treatment in hot weather. That’s where she was getting her rest.”

Soon there will be a similar shelter for women with cancer in the Daksha Chudgar Lydia House, which is under construction.

It is one of The Lydia Project’s services that will benefit from the eighth annual Dessert Auction, which will take place Thursday at the Richmond on Greene hotel in Augusta.

In addition to desserts, there will be a silent auction with more than 100 items, including a platinum golf car and dinner for 20 at Sconyers Bar-B-Que.

“For eight years we’ve been providing this awesome dessert opportunity in Augusta while we take care of women,” Canchola said.

Cookbook author and television host Nathalie Dupree will be the special guest.

Events such as Thursday’s auction help the project provide free services and still operate, Canchola said.

“You’ve got to pay the electric bill,” she said.

It also helps provide emergency services for women with cancer, Canchola said.

“Keeping the lights on for them, too,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many women (here) are not getting any income because for five or six weeks they are just sick.”

Even women who have been working the same job for 20 years could suddenly find themselves in dire straits if they are out sick for three months while being treated, Canchola said.

“I really think I am on target here when I say this house will save lives,” Canchola said.

The eighth annual Dessert Auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at The Richmond on Greene hotel, 725 Greene St.

The proceeds will benefit The Lydia Project, which provides services for women who have cancer.

The tickets cost $25 and are available at SunTrust Bank branches in Augusta and through The Lydia Project Web site: thelydiaproject.org.

There will be a dessert contest, dessert auction and silent auction.

Cookbook author and television host Nathalie Dupree will be a special guest.

SunTrust Bank, 2901 Washington Road in Augusta, will hold a $5 car wash today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit The Lydia Project.
