Mayor-elect Hardie Davis nearly tripled the fundraising of his nearest competitor, Augusta Commission member Alvin Mason, in his quest to become mayor, raising $144,760, according to campaign financial reports due last week.
In a reporting period that stretched from April 1 through the May 20 election to June 30, Davis raised $54,422.56 and spent $77,877.50, ending the campaign with a balance of $12,023.22.
Davis doubled his campaign debt during the period, starting with an existing $7,500 loan and adding another loan to himself of $14,563.18 on May 6.
Davis’ largest donors during the period were three political action committees – hospital group HCA Georgia, which gave $2,500, and Southeastern Carpenters Regional Council and the Builders PAC, both of which gave $2,000.
His largest expenditures during the period were with Evans-based TranterGrey Media Group. Davis spent $26,719.50 on advertising with TranterGrey, owned by Sally and Blaine Bailey.
Second-place finisher Mason ended his campaign with $2,758.33 on hand. He raised a total of $53,648.62 in his quest for the mayor’s office, paying off a $5,000 campaign loan during the period and spending a total of $50,890.29.
Mason’s largest contributors included Macon, Ga., contractors Prairie Mount Land Co. and Utili-Vision Inc., both of which gave $1,000. City outside counsel Jim Plunkett gave Mason $250, and demolition company Chaplin and Sons, which occasionally does work for the city, gave him $500.
Helen Blocker-Adams, who withdrew from the race the Sunday before the election, reported raising $20,033.25 and spending all of it. Her biggest donor was businessman Donnie Thompson, who gave $2,500.
Charles Cummings reported that he raised no funds in his campaign for mayor. His only reported expense on the latest report was a May 31 food bill of $257.30 at the DoubleTree hotel.
Educator Lori Myles raised a total of $6,500 during the campaign, which she ended with a balance of $59.46. She reported spending only $600 since March 31, on graphic design services.
