With the threat of canceled conventions looming, the Augusta Commission will reconsider approving management agreements to govern the Augusta Convention Center at a noon meeting Monday.
The concerns, voiced Friday by Mayor Deke Copenhaver, compete with those of critics who say the agreements cost the city too much. Last week, five commissioners voted in favor of the documents, but six are needed for their passage.
The meeting will be before the commission’s regular Monday committee meetings. The city’s public safety panel will consider Mayor Pro Tem Joe Bowles’ motion to establish a committee of city officials to examine citywide where Light Transportation Vehicles are safe to operate.
The public services committee will consider an ordinance making it illegal to leave an unattended animal in a vehicle, and whether to designate Heery International the project manager for the new public transit operation and maintenance facility in south Augusta.
The administrative services committee will consider an ordinance tightening prohibitions against leaving an unattended child inside a vehicle.
The finance committee will discuss Copenhaver’s proposal to use the former chamber of commerce building on Broad Street as a temporary headquarters for what he has termed a “collaboration center” to encourage business development. The committee also will review Commissioner Jerry Brigham’s request for a new tax allocation district downtown to “support the merged university” and facilitate the addition of a hotel.
The commission also has a 10 a.m. workshop to consider a budget plan presented to them by city administrator Fred Russell on Oct. 16.
The budget assumes 1 percent growth in the city’s property tax digest and $500,000 less in sales tax revenues from the first phase of a new exemption for manufacturers. The document calls for adding 13 city-funded positions and spending $4 million from the city’s reserves and presents options for employee cost-of-living adjustments for employees.
