'Southern Living' recognizes Augusta mayor for Laney-Walker, Bethlehem redevelopment project

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver was recognized Wednesday by Southern Living magazine with a "Heroes of the New South" honorable mention for the Laney-Walker/Bethlehem redevelopment project.

Copenhaver, named in the architecture category of the award's inaugural class, credited city staff; consultants Jesse Wiles, Martin Melaver and Patti McIntosh; and steering committee members Betty Beard, Marion Barnes and Cedric Johnson with helping bring about the project's success.

The redevelopment initiative has previously been recognized by the American Architectural Foundation, American Planning Association and The Harvard Student Journal of Real Estate, and recently was awarded the Georgia Planning Association's Outstanding Plan Implementation Award.
