Aiken lawmakers question officials about delays

AIKEN, S.C. — State lawmakers from the Aiken area are questioning county elections officials about long lines to vote last week.

The Aiken Standard reported that Edgefield Sen. Shane Massey said Monday that residents told him they waited 90 minutes to vote in one neighborhood.

Elections director Cynthia Holland says she doesn’t think her office had enough voting machines. County Administrator Clay Killian says Holland had asked for 14 more machines but the request was rejected because of the $31,000 cost.

Rep. Roland Smith says he got questions all day about the long lines. Sen. Tom Young says he was told voters at one precinct waited more than two hours.

Holland also said she doesn’t know what caused telephone problems for those trying to call her office on Election Day.
