Richmond County Board of Education officials approved appointments of two new principals Thursday.
Brenda Taylor, currently principal of Willis Foreman Elementary School, will become principal of Lucy C. Laney High School, replacing former principal Tonia Mason. Mason’s April resignation will take effect June 30.
Isaac Lee will be promoted from assistant principal of T.W. Josey High School, taking over for Ronald Wiggins. Wiggins was hired to be one of three regional chiefs for the Muscogee County school system in April.
Lee will face several challenges when he assumes his position at T.W. Josey, mainly overseeing the reconfiguration of the school to a 6-12 grade school.
Murphey Middle School and Josey High School will merge in the next few years as part of a rightsizing program, with eighth graders moving to the school in August 2015, and sixth and seventh graders following in 2017.
The RCBOE approved, using special purpose local option sales tax funds, to build a new middle school wing at T.W. Josey.
Board chair Venus Cain said she expects both appointees to keep “doing the hard work” in their new posts.
“There will be a lot of hard work necessary for them to do when they start,” Cain said. “But I expect to hear a lot of good things coming out of these schools in the future.”
