Evans Christian Academy’s 12 graduates nervously milled around Crossbridge Baptist Church in Augusta on Saturday, awaiting the start of the commencement ceremonies.
Taylor Drennen, 18, of Augusta, said she wasn’t sad on the day that ends her high school career.
Classmate Alexis Sweatt, 18, of Hephzibah, was nervous, though. She couldn’t hold back tears as she received her diploma and her father, Shawn Sweatt, joined her on stage.
“This is my baby, and I’m so proud of her today,” he said before hugging his daughter.
Valedictorian Kevin Puha reflected on his few years at the school.
Teacher Alex McClain, who was the commencement speaker, passed along wisdom to help the graduates as they move into another chapter of their lives.
“Act appropriately,” she said, adding that acting, dressing, speaking and living appropriately will help them be successful in whatever they choose to do after graduation.
“Pray,” McClain said. “Be kind. And remember good things about each day.”
