Correction: Friday's story on the hiring of Jeff Carney as Columbia County's associate school superintendent included incorrect titles for Deborah Franklin and Robert Jarrell. Both are assistant superintendents. The Chronicle regrets the error.
As Sandra Carraway moves up to become Columbia County’s new school superintendent, a former assistant is returning to fill her vacancy in the system’s administrative roster.
Former Lakeside High School Principal Jeff Carney, who more recently served in Columbia County as an associate superintendent from 2010 to 2011, will return next year as associate superintendent.
Carraway currently is deputy superintendent, a title that won’t be filled, Superintendent Charles Nagle said.
For the past two years, Carney has been superintendent in Lincoln County. Carraway recommended Carney after the school board approved her contract as superintendent Tuesday.
Under that contract’s terms, provided Friday by board attorney Leonard O. “Pete” Fletcher, Carraway will earn $180,200, which includes a car allowance.
Nagle’s current pay is $206,452, Fletcher said. According to the state salary database, Carraway’s pay as deputy superintendent is $135,401.
Carney does not yet have a contract, “but the associate superintendent (pay) scale tops out at $122,000,” Fletcher said.
“He will receive $3,000 for his doctorate and a $4,000 sum as a gas allowance for a total compensation of $129,000,” Fletcher said.
