Suspect sought after attempted theft at Augusta gas station

Deputies are on the lookout for a man who tried to take money Wednesday from an Augusta gas pump.

About 1 a.m., the man went to purchase gas at Sprint Food Stores in the 2200 block in Gordon Highway. While at the pump, surveillance video captured him trying to pry open a compartment of the pump to remove the cash vault, according to an incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Certain locations of Sprint Food Stores allow customers to pay with cash at the pump.

When the suspect was unsuccessful at removing the vault, he fled in a white vehicle.

Deputies described the suspect as black, about 25 years old, 6 feet tall and 230 pounds.
