Augusta teen arrested in drive-by shooting that injured 14-year-old

Brandon Hilton, 17, was charged in Saturday's shooting.

Deputies have arrested a teen who they say shot a 14-year-old outside Jimmy John’s on Agerton Lane late Saturday.

The suspect, Brandon DeShawn Hilton, 17, of Augusta, was booked into the Richmond County jail Sunday on charges of aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and criminal damage to property in the first and second degree, according to a statement from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

About 10:15 p.m. Saturday, deputies were called to the shopping center across the street from Regal Cinemas on Agerton Lane, where about five shots were fired in an apparent drive-by shooting, Lt. Lewis Blanchard said.

Windows on a vacant storefront and at Jimmy John’s were struck by two bullets. A third bullet struck Tyrese Deondre Hammond, of Hephzibah, in the upper chest. He was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police said.

According to witnesses, the suspects fled in a tan SUV, which was last seen heading toward Wheeler Road.

Police temporarily shut both lanes on Agerton Lane while investigators photographed the scene. Moviegoers at Regal Cinemas and patrons at Limelite Cafe were told to stay clear of the parking lots.

The investigation is ongoing, Blanchard said.
