Mother killed near Summerville, S.C. originally from Aiken

A 26-year-old mother killed Tuesday by her boyfriend near Summerville, S.C., was originally from Aiken County, said Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

Ashley Kaney and her 8-year-old daughter, Riley Burdick, were found dead in their beds, according to The Associated Press.

According to a report in The Charleston Post and Courier, Jacob Theophilis Philip, a 22-year-old student at the Nuclear Power Training School in Goose Creek, S.C., was arrested by police in Virginia Beach on an unrelated charge of grand larceny auto. Philip confessed to the killings.

Salisbury said the 8-year-old was strangled to death, The Post and Courier reported. Kaney’s cause of death was pending a toxicology and microscopic test, he said.

Katherine Kaney, of Aiken, said her daughter moved near Summerville about a year ago, according to The Post and Courier. She was taking classes at the Medical University of South Carolina to become a dentist while working and caring for her daughter.

Katherine Kaney said Riley’s father, Paul Burdick, also lives in Aiken, The Post and Courier reported.

Salisbury told The Associated Press a social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to the home Tuesday morning after the girl missed two days of school. When no one answered the door, she called the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
