Man who jumped off highway overpass dead

A man who jumped from an overpass onto Bobby Jones Expressway on Thursday died from the leap, Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said Friday morning.

Justin Phillip Rhye, 27, of Augusta, died at Georgia Regents Medical Center at 7:35 p.m. of blunt-force trauma.

Police were called to the Walton Way Extension overpass about 7 p.m. for reports of a suicidal person.

Rhye leaped about 40 feet from the fenced bridge onto the eastbound lane of the Bobby Jones Expressway on-ramp to Interstate 20.

According to a report, his roommate, who worked with him at Salon Glitz on Walton Way Extension, was driving by and saw Rhye on the outside edge of the bridge. After calling 911, the roommate stopped and tried to get Rhye back to safety, but he jumped.

Witnesses told police it appeared Rhye dived head-first off the bridge into traffic.

He was taken to the hospital after deputies discovered him unconscious and not breathing.
