Man jumps into Augusta Canal to escape arrest

A man eluded Richmond County authorities early Wednesday by jumping into the Augusta Canal after a traffic stop. But it didn’t take deputies long to figure out who he is.

About 12:40 a.m., an officer pulled over a 2002 Ford Explorer, intending to write a ticket charging the driver with running a red light at Broad and 13th streets, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The driver, identified by police as Nicholas Bradley Adams, 28, pulled into Circle K at 306 13th St., jumped out of the SUV and ran toward Ellis Street. Adams then jumped into the canal and swam across.

In his vehicle, authorities found several empty capsules, a small plastic bag of what appeared to be marijuana and a clear bag with a white powdery substance.

Officers identified Adams, of the 1100 block of Fox Den Road in Hephzibah, by running his license tag, pulling a previous jail photo and speaking to his passenger. He faces charges of obstruction of law enforcement, failure to obey a traffic control light, driving while license suspended and open container.
