Bond granted for Augusta man involved in shootout

A $40,000 bond was set Wednesday for an Augusta man accused of aggravated assault and other charges in an April shootout at a Richmond Hill Road apartment complex.

Christopher Y. Bush, 25, has been held in jail since his April 15 arrest. According to Assistant District Attorney Rex Myers, Bush got into an argument with Clinton Coleman, 26, and his brother after they were kicked out of a nightclub. The argument continued at the apartment complex, and Bush grabbed an assault rifle and fired it, Myers said. Coleman was shot in the chest.

Defense attorney Kirk Gilliard told the judge that Bush has maintained from the beginning that he fired in self-defense. In addition to shell casings from the weapon Bush used, investigators found several spent rounds from another gun at the scene of the shooting, Gilliard said.

Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet set the bond for Bush, who had one previous felony conviction. Bush, according to his attorney, is a high school graduate who works full time and takes care of his three children.
