Augusta Transitional Center inmate dies in crash

An inmate from the Augusta Transitional Center died in a car crash Friday afternoon after he failed to return from his assigned work duty.

Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan confirmed that LaAngelo Coleman was released from the facility for his work site Friday, but she could not release the location.

Coleman was serving a sentence for theft by taking and was incarcerated three previous times, according to the Department of Corrections Web site.

According to Wilkes County Deputy Coroner Blake Thompson, Coleman, 39, of Harlem, died at 1:15 p.m. when he lost control of the van he was driving, hit a tree and was ejected from the vehicle.

Coleman was traveling north on Highway 17 when he crashed two miles outside the Washington, Ga., city limits.

The Augusta Transitional Center is a minimum-security facility on Taylor Street for 200 men that assigns inmates to work release.
