Augusta Youth Development Campus captain suspended during investigation

A captain at the Augusta Youth Development Campus was suspended with pay during an investigation of the facility.

The investigation began after Jade Holder, 19, died Nov. 8 of blunt force trauma to the head after being beaten at the YDC the previous day. Three days later, a fellow inmate, 17-year-old Michael Jarod Everidge, was charged with murder.

Authorities said Holder was in his cell in Unit 43, which houses about 20 inmates in one-person cells, when the attack occurred.

According to Department of Juvenile Justice spokeswoman Emily Gest, the YDC captain was suspended Nov. 10 pending an investigation into possible employee misconduct.

The department wouldn’t release the captain’s name or the elements of the misconduct; however, Gest said he had been with the department since April after having resigned his position in April 2010. She said she didn’t know why he resigned.

Everidge, whose mother said he was in the YDC for purse snatching, was scheduled to appear at a bond hearing Friday but did not show up.

Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Easterling said she wasn’t sure why Everidge wasn’t present, and court security staffers had no reason, either.

Keiondra Everidge said outside the courtroom that she has received no information from the Department of Juvenile Justice about the circumstances surrounding her son’s murder charge. She received a “hysterical” phone call from her son last Thursday saying he was being charged with murder, but he had to hang up after four or five minutes, she said.

Everidge immediately went to the detention facility on Mike Padgett Highway but said she was told that her son wasn’t there and that corrections staffers wouldn’t tell her where he was. She hasn’t spoken with her son since last week.

“I don’t have any answers,” Everidge said. “But I would certainly like some.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the criminal aspect of the case, while the Department of Juvenile Justice investigates policies and procedures at the facility.
