Paugh funeral route announced

The funeral procession after services for Deputy James D. Paugh will extend about six miles, from First Baptist Church of Augusta to Hillcrest Memorial Park. Intersections are not expected to be closed to traffic until after the service, which starts at 11 a.m. and might take an hour or more.

Richmond County sheriff’s Maj. Richard Weaver said the motorcade will leave the church on Walton Way Extension and head south on Jackson Road to North Leg Road, where the procession will turn left onto Gordon Highway and into Hillcrest Cemetery on Deans Bridge Road.

The procession will include representatives from multiple agencies, including the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department and wreckers from local tow truck companies. Columbia County deputies will handle traffic duties such as closing intersections, Weaver said.

Paugh, a motorcycle deputy, was shot early Sunday when he stopped to investigate a suspicious vehicle on Bobby Jones Expressway at Gordon Highway. Police say his shooter, Christopher Hodges, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
