Augusta metro area sees slight gain in jobs in February

The Augusta metro area added 500 jobs to its economy in February, according to labor data released Thursday.

Gains in hospitality, manufacturing, construction and state government workers were offset by losses in education and health services and retail.

The Georgia labor department said there were 215,800 jobs in the metro area in February, up from 215,300 in January.

Despite the net gain, the employment level is lower than the 217,700 reported for February 2013. Government is 1,700 jobs lower that a year ago. Likewise, professional and business services is 1,200 jobs lower and the education and health services sector is 1,100 jobs lower.

The job sectors higher than a year ago is hospitality by 1,900 jobs and manufacturing by 300.
