After baking in her spare time for years, a twist of fate allowed Sharon Hutko to go into business for herself.
“It happened very, very quickly. It wasn’t planned. Things just kind of fell into place,” Hutko said.
Hutko opened Delightful Bites Cakery at 3801 Washington Road in Augusta in 2011. The owner of another bakery in that location had decided to go out of business and contacted Hutko about purchasing her assets.
When she received the call, Hutko was leasing kitchen space part-time and selling her cupcakes at Augusta Market and a local grocery store. She was considering buying a 30-quart mixer in New York City at a low price, though she wasn’t quite sure what she would do with it.
When Hutko compared her own equipment to the previous owner’s assets, the mixer that she had just purchased in New York was the only equipment that she would have needed. Within a month, she opened her doors, starting a brand new business.
“It’s just kind of neat how that all worked out,” Hutko said. “We just knew these were the right doors we needed to walk through and this is where we’re supposed to be.”
Initially, Delightful Bites Cakery sold gourmet cupcakes and cakes, pecan sandies and cheese straws, but Hutko immediately started receiving requests for event cakes. She re-evaluated her vision and expanded into selling wedding and birthday cakes.
Hutko still bakes and decorates most of her products. She has a staff of six employees.
“At the end of the day, it’s my name, so I really try hard to make sure that everything that goes out of here is representative of what I would want it to be,” Hutko said.
Hutko now leases space a few doors down for birthday parties and workshops for children and adults on cupcake and cookie decorating and cake pop making. She also sells professional-line decorating supplies for the home baker.
“We had so many people come in and ask if we sold flavorings, colors or boxes and things. We really just saw an opportunity to make those things available,” Hutko said.
