Neapolitan Cupcake in Augusta to close doors next weekend

A cupcake bakery in Augusta will serve its last treat next weekend.

Neapolitan Cupcake & Gift Shoppe in Le Pavilion Shopping Center will close Dec. 20 after more than four years in business. Owner Molly Meek is moving to Dallas to pursue other business ventures.

Meek said her decision to close the store was largely influenced by market conditions.

Augusta is saturated by cupcake and baked good products offered by other small businesses and large retailers, she said.

Since opening on Pleasant Home Road in November 2010, Meek said companies such as Duncan Hines have “demystified” the baking industry. The tools now available to the public have started to lessen the value of boutique bakery services, she said.

“For me to continue with Neapolitan, I needed a game-changing idea to make it worth my while, and I never found the perfect idea,” Meek said.

She operated another bakery in downtown Aiken for about a year, but closed it in 2012 after traffic was weaker than anticipated.

Meek said her Augusta store staff of three employees have found jobs with local small businesses.
