Goody Two Shoes inventory ruined by ice storm damage

From the outside, Dotty McGaha’s discount shoe shop on the corner of Broad Street and Milledge Road looks intact. The inside, however, tells a different story.

The building’s roof partially collapsed under the weight of ice at Goody Two Shoes, a fixture on the Harrisburg corner for 19 years, said McGaha, who discovered the store in shambles Thursday night.

“It was like walking into a dark cave that had water just dripping heavily all over,” she said. “All of the ice, snow and the rain came through the ceiling and it just damaged everything. It’s just a terrible mess.”

On Wednesday, McGaha completed an inventory for the insurance company.

She fears that everything in the showroom, including 4,500 pairs of shoes, jewelry, luggage and handbags are ruined from either water or moisture exposure.

“It’s a loss,” McGaha said. “Every shoe in there has got to be gotten rid of – the carpets, the ceiling, the counters. It’s just a mess.”

McGaha said she is still trying to determine whether she’ll remain at 201 Milledge Road or move to a new building. A roof leak caused about $6,000 worth of damage once before, she said.

“We’re really praying about that,” she said. “We don’t know what to do.”

Regardless of her decision, McGaha expects the business will remain closed for about a month.
