Cabela Drive precedes Cabela's opening

Cabela’s isn’t open yet in Augusta, but a road has already been renamed in its honor.

A portion of Alexander Drive leading into the Village at Riverwatch development was changed to Cabela Drive at the request of property developer, MGHerring Group, as part of the company’s “purchase and sales agreement,” according to city documents.

A resolution to rename the road, dated Nov. 19, said the request was made to honor the commitment Cabela’s made to the metro Augusta area as the company’s first store in Georgia. The only cost assigned to the city was for installation of the road signs, according to the resolution.

At least two-thirds of the adjoining property owners agreed to the name change, according to the city.

Costco, which does not employ a public relations staff and was unable to be reached for comment, was among the surrounding companies to agree to the
new road name, said Augusta traffic engineer Steve Cassell.

Costco was the first retail tenant to open in the 92-acre development in 2011.

Cabela’s 42,000-square-foot Outpost store is set to open March 20 with 90 employees. The store cost about $10 million to build.

Attempts to reach Cabela’s corporate offices in Nebraska were not immediately successful.
