Dish continues to seek deal with Media General

Local Dish customers remain in danger of losing programming on ABC affiliate WJBF because the satellite provider has been unable to reach a retransmission agreement since June with the broadcaster’s parent company, Media General.

Dish representatives said in a statement that the company has offered a short-term extension of an existing deal with Media General pending the broadcaster’s merger with Young Broadcasting, expected to complete by the fourth quarter. Young Broadcasting will control 68.3 percent of the company and already has a long-term agreement in place with Dish, the satellite provider said.

Dish is fighting what it calls a “massive price increase” from Media General. There are 17 Southern markets that would be affected by the stalemate. A 90-day extension granted as the companies continued talks will end Sept. 28.

A similar issue between Dish and Raycom Media was settled Aug. 9 with an undisclosed agreement. Because of the standoff, Dish customers in the area lost access to Fox affiliate WFXG for about a week.
