Sam Oshana is bringing more Mediterranean flavor to the metro Augusta food scene this fall when he and his business partner open the area’s first Pita Pit in Evans.
The fast-food franchise will occupy a 1,500-square-foot storefront at 4336 Washington Road that was vacated by Whatever! A Unique Boutique in June. The restaurant is expected to open Oct. 17, Oshana said.
Oshana described the cuisine as a cross between Lebanese and American food. The restaurant will serve an array of meat, vegetarian and breakfast pitas in addition to soups, salads and a smoothie bar. Traditional Middle Eastern and Greek dishes, such as falafel, souvlaki, baba ghanoush and hummus, will be offered as pita toppings, Oshana said.
Though the restaurant will be open only for lunch and dinner, Oshana said breakfast items can be ordered at any time.
“This is something that really gives us a mix,” he said. “It’ll be something unique and fresh for the community.”
The project is a joint venture between Oshana and Mike Jijika. They plan initially to hire about four employees at the restaurant, which can accommodate about 20 diners.
Oshana was born and raised in Iraq but moved to California when he was 19. He returned to Iraq to provide linguistic support to the U.S. military during the war. He and his wife moved from Chicago to Evans two years ago.
There are 300 Pita Pit locations in North America; the company’s U.S. operations are based in Idaho.
Pita Pit was founded in Ontario in 1955, and restaurant franchising began across Canada in 1997. The first U.S. location opened in 1999 near Syracuse University in New York.
The closest restaurants to Augusta are in Statesboro and Columbia.
