October grand opening set for Aiken Sam's Club

The grand opening of a new Sam’s Club in Aiken has been scheduled for Oct. 3, according to club management.

Construction on the 136,000-square-foot building is nearly complete, and a crew is finishing the parking lot, said Gerald Raymond, the club manager.

In coming weeks, employees will begin stocking the store at 220 U.S. Highway 1, which intersects Robert M. Bell Parkway, Raymond said.

“Everything’s going according to plan,” he said. “We’re just waiting to get the merchandise, and everything set in there.”

The store will include a gas station, a pharmacy, an optical department, a photo center, along with fresh produce, meat and bakery departments. Delivery and installation services also will be offered.

The Aiken store took about eight months to build and was designed with environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient fixtures.

The store will employ 175 associates, with about 90 percent of the hiring already done, Raymond said.

“... We’ll continue to hire, too, as we’re open,” he said.

Sam’s Club, a subsidiary of Wal-Mart, is a retail warehouse for members only. Annual membership fees for shoppers begin at $45.

The Aiken store will make the second Sam’s Club in metro Augusta, joining the Bobby Jones Expressway store in Richmond County.
