Better Business Bureau offers free shredding services

As part of a national identity theft and fraud protection effort, Better Business Bureau is hosting a free “Secure Your ID Day” shredding event on April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Walmart parking lot on Bobby Jones Expressway.

Consumers can bring up to three boxes/bags of paper documents to be shredded on site. The BBB recommends that utility bills, pay stubs, bank statements and cancelled checks be shredded after one year. If a cancelled check or bank statement serves as proof of a charitable donation or some other tax information, the BBB recommends keeping the document for seven years.
