Borders store officially closed

The sales are over and the Borders bookstore on Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway is officially closed.

The Borders chain announced its Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, but only closed 200 of its 642 stores at that time. In July, the company announced that liquidation companies Hilco and Gordon Brothers had purchased the store assets and the remaining 399 stores would be closed, including Augusta.

The Augusta store’s last day was Thursday. Workers were clearing out the store Friday.

Company spokeswoman Mary Davis said it’s unlikely that the Augusta store sold all of their books, and that any remaining inventory would go to the liquidating companies’ warehouses.

Davis is one of Borders’ 11,000 employees that will be jobless soon.

“I’ll be out of a job next week,” she said. “It’s not fun.”
