Impact of SRS budget cuts to be discussed at public forum

Savannah River Site’s top leaders will discuss the impact of pending budget cuts during a public forum Thursday at Aiken Technical College.

The two-hour forum will begin at 9 a.m. with presenters including David Moody, Department of Energy manager of Savannah River Site; and Doug Hintze, acting chief financial officer.

Topics will include the impact of automatic funding cuts triggered by sequestration and evolving efforts to reduce federal spending.

“The sizable impact of SRS on our economy makes this a very important topic for our community,” said Rick McLeod, the executive director of the SRS Community Reuse Organization, which is sponsoring the event. “Anytime there are furloughs or layoffs at SRS, there is a ripple effect throughout the local economy.”

McLeod said the DOE representatives will discuss the recent impact of sequestration and reprogramming federal funds, provide an overview of the president’s fiscal year 2014 budget request and offer a glimpse into the outlook for future years.
