Kmart on Washington Road closing

Kmart in West Town Market Square shopping center in Martinez will begin its store-closing liquidation sale Sunday.

The store at 3830 Washington Road, one of three Kmarts in the metro area, is on Sears Holding Co.’s latest update to its list of store closings. That list also includes a Kmart in Athens, Ga.

Chicago-based Sears Holdings has been shuttering underperforming Kmart and Sears stores since last year in an effort to reduce expenses.

Michael Sosby, the manager of the Martinez Kmart, confirmed the store is closing but said he was not permitted to provide details.

Sears Holding spokeswoman Kim Freely said the store is closing because its lease is not being renewed. Leases are not renewed for a number of reasons, she said, including the landlord or Sears Holding choosing not to renew it, the store not performing well or someone else buying the property.

The store is more than 30 years old, Sosby said.

The store, which has 77 employees, is expected to close near the end of September, Freely said.

“Those associates will be notified of open positions at other nearby Sears and Kmart locations, but they will have to apply for those positions,” Freely said.

Kansas-based Westtown Marketplace LLC is listed on property records as owner of the shopping center.

Ann Davis, the senior vice president at Meybohm Commercial Properties and an agent for Westtown, said the company has not received official notice of the closure and is unable to comment.
