The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited HP Pelzer Automotive Systems Inc. and staffing agency Sizemore Inc. for 22 violations, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Monday. Proposed penalties are $207,100.
According to a news release, OSHA began its inspection of Pelzer’s facility in Thomson after receiving complaints alleging hazards within the workplace.
HP Pelzer, a supplier of automotive parts for major car manufacturers, employs 256 workers at its Thomson plant – 176 of which are temporary employees.
“HP Pelzer continues to put workers at risk of serious injury or death by failing to correct unguarded equipment and other serious hazards,” said Bill Fulcher, director of OSHA’s Atlanta-East Area Office. “Additionally, Sizemore must work proactively with its client to ensure temporary workers receive appropriate safety and health training.”
According to the release, inspections found that HP Pelzer had committed 11 serious safety and health violations, including exposing workers to “potential thermal skin burns from unprotected hot pipes and fittings.” The violations carried more than $80,000 in penalties.
The company was also cited for three repeat violations associated with inspections in 2008 and 2009. The violations, which carry a penalty of $121,000, involved exposing workers to amputation and laceration hazards stemming from the lack of guarding on machine parts, according to the release.
Sizemore was cited for one violation, drawing a $6,000 penalty, for failing to provide temporary workers with training in regard to handling formaldehyde.
According to the release, “Both companies have 15 days from the receipt of the citations and proposed penalties to comply, request a conference with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission.”
