Weinberger's moving after 34 years

Weinberger's is leaving store on Washington Road

For 34 years, furniture shoppers have seen Weinberger’s Furniture and Mattress Showcase at the corner of Washington and Furys Ferry roads.

By the end of the year, that address is going to change. Weinberger’s is moving into the former Ivan Allen furniture store location at 3021 River Watch Parkway, adjacent to Martin Marietta.

“We just felt like it was a good time and a good opportunity. Good access to (Interstate) 20 and good visibility,” said owner Mark Weinberger. “It’s been a great location, but we’re looking forward to something fresh and new.”

The interstate will provide easy access to customers in South Carolina.

The store’s current shopping center has also changed over the years and no longer has a focus on retail, Weinberger said.

Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA, which owns Village West shopping center, has launched a multiphase project to construct a new college campus, restaurant and conference center. Upon completion of the project, only Social Inc. will remain in the center.

Weinberger said that he has purchased the building at 3021 River Watch Parkway, which measures 30,000 square feet, the same size as the store’s current space. He is currently renovating the building.

The new facility will have a design center, nicer displays and better lighting. It also will use eco-friendly techniques for lighting, heating and air and insulation, Weinberger said.

Goodwill Industries will occupy the furniture store space on Washington Road, but it has not decided how it will use the facility, said Susan Everitt, the company’s director of communications.

The new Edgar’s restaurant, conference center and Helms College student services center will total about 26,500 square feet.

These facilities are under construction in the middle of the shopping center and will not occupy the Weinberger’s space, Everitt said.

The River Watch Parkway store will offer all new merchandise because Weinberger hopes to sell all existing furniture in a store-moving sale.

The store will employ several additional interior designers. All store locations have 50 employees, he said.

Weinberger’s Furniture has been in business 80 years. The family-owned company also includes Weinberger’s Furniture and Rug Outlet at 2525 Reynolds Industrial Road; Weinberger’s Business Interiors, which has already moved to 3021 River Watch Parkway; Furnish 123 at 5003 Steiner Way in Grovetown; and a Lake Oconee showroom in Greensboro, Ga.
