Sitel hiring 150 people in Augusta

Augusta’s largest call center is on track to being back to 900 staffers by the end of the year.


Two new clients for Nashville, Tenn.-based Sitel have prompted a hiring spree for 150 employees for its Augusta center.

Between now and the end of November, the company needs to add 130 people to handle customer care service and technical support for an unnamed national wireless provider, and another 20 new hires for an unnamed financial services client, Sitel announced Wednesday.

“We’re actively recruiting,” said Phil Madden, the site director at Sitel. “We won additional business based on the performance of this site.”

Madden said the Windsor Spring Road facility will be close to capacity with the new employees.

Staffing levels at Sitel have been as high as 1,300 in the early 2000s and about 1,000 in 2006.

“We have a seasonal program that we’re doing that will end at the end of the year, but we’re looking to transition those folks that we’ve hired into permanent, full-time roles,” Madden said. “Depending on the direction of the client, we could be looking to hire more in the new year.”

Madden said employees hired for the financial client will undergo two weeks of in-house training. Those who will handle calls for the wireless carrier need four weeks of training, Madden said. The starting pay for the jobs is $8.50 per hour with the top being $10.50 over time.

Sitel has clients in the communication, financial and health care fields. Madden said Sitel operates three shifts in Augusta, covering 24 hours a day.

“We do see a lot of people at job fairs. We have a better recruiting engine and that is the billboards on Bobby Jones Expressway. And we have an employee referral program,” Madden said.

Madden said the company has a good flow of applicants, but finding the right people is the challenge. The company wants applicants with good customer service and computer skills. Previous sales and call center experience is a bonus, Madden said, with knowledge of the wireless and financial services industries preferred for respective positions.

Sitel has been in Augusta since 1999. The company has 52,000 employees in 121 customer centers in 26 countries.

The company has been in a hiring mode in October, announcing 120 positions for its facility in Andalusia, Ala., and 90 in Amarillo, Texas.
