Clearwater Finishing Plant fire cleanup still unfinished

CLEARWATER — Cleanup and demolition of the two Clearwater Finishing Plant buildings damaged by fire nearly two months ago is almost done, according to the owner.

Christian Morton said he and his crew have done the demolition slowly in order to clean up as they go, and make the site as less of an eyesore.

“I didn’t want the locals to have to look at the demo mess after they’ve had to look at the building mess for the past 30 years,” he said.

It took two weeks before the site cooled down enough to start cleaning. Arson was suspected, but Morton said the case is still unresolved.

“I’m just glad we stayed positive and we’re still moving ahead,” he said.

The cleanup should be complete in about one month, Morton estimated, at which time the project will become more of a remodeling job. He plans to reuse as many original plant materials as possible.

“Once it’s clean and looking pretty, we’ll start reusing materials to start really developing,” he said.
