The Patch looks good when it's not so crowded

The place of the father in the modern suburban family is a very small one, particularly if he plays golf.

OK, how many of you slipped out to The Patch last weekend for some discount golf?

I left work early Thursday when I heard things had pretty much closed at the Augusta Municipal Golf Course.

I found the driveway open off Damascus Road and turned in.

The afternoon was bright. The sky was blue. And the fairways were really green.

It looked great.

If I only had my clubs.

I didn’t, though, so I replayed a couple of rounds in my head, including the first time my then-14-year-old beat me, although we both parred 18 with almost identical parallel shots, mine down the left side, his down the right.

It was a good day.

A QUESTION: Evelyn Price shares a riddle. Mary’s father has five daughters: Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter? (Answer below)

WEATHER OR NOT: Did you know we’re getting better at weather predictions? The New York Times had a long feature about it Sunday, and while acknowledging that most of us still find fault with local TV weathermen, it has found that big picture regional forecasting has improved tremendously.

One of the highlights is hurricane path projections. Three decades ago, we could be hundred of miles off. Today, we are much, much more precise.

MARS MISSION: George Dean writes that he didn’t send any postcards this summer, but he was in Mars, Pa., when our spacecraft landed on Mars.

“Mars, Pa., as baseball fans know, is the home of the great ace pitcher Elroy Face,” he writes.

TODAY’S JOKE: After she woke up, a woman told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for our anniversary. What do you think it means?”

“You’ll know tonight,” he said with a smile.

That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife.

Delighted, she opened it to find a book titled The Meaning of Dreams.

(Riddle answer? “Mary”)
