“I knew it the minute I saw it! I have coveted this Mercedes since the first time I laid eyes on what was probably the first one in Augusta about five to seven years ago! I have seen only a few more in Augusta since.”

It was used as a military vehicle years ago and it was popular among many professional athlete’s and entertainers about 10-plus years ago when Mercedes created a civilian version of the G-Wagen.”

CANTON, GA.: David Anderson wrote: “This is one Mercedes that has always appeared to be a little off-kilter to me, and now I know why. It is actually built in Austria for Mercedes by auto manufacturer Magna Steyr.
“Never heard of Magna Steyr, you say? That’s because all they do is build cars on a contract basis for other manufacturers you do know, and the Mercedes-Benz G Class – or G Wagon, as it was called early in its life – is but one of those cars. Most of the engineering and design is performed by Mercedes, and Magna Steyr figures out the production end.
“The G Wagon was originally proposed as a military vehicle by a famous Middle East ruler early in the 1970s who was a large shareholder at the time. It has been in constant production in its civilian form since 1979. It was to be replaced by the GL SUV, but market research showed that there was still a strong market for an off-road vehicle as capable as this.
“Over the years, it has slowly morphed from the not-so-luxurious civilized military vehicle to proudly wear the Mercedes badge of a luxurious SUV. More than likely, most of the G-Class vehicles sold today hardly see anything other than asphalt and concrete, but with three fully locking differentials and ample ground clearance, this is one four-wheel-drive luxury SUV that could claw its way out of most anything you would dare to try to stick it in!”
