What is it?

“Here we have one of King Midas’ rides. It can be said of any Mercedes, but especially of the Mercedes SUV lineup, that they start off at expensive and go up from there.

“The cheapest GL350 with the 240-horsepower 3.0L V-6 turbo diesel will run you a little over $62,000, and the ultimate GL63 AMG version with its 5.5-liter, 550-horsepower V-8 will set you back nearly $117,000.

“Suffice it to say that most any high-tech, luxury or convenience option can be had on the GL except for the valet to remove your shoes as you enter the luxurious cabin so as not to soil the deep-pile carpeting.

“This vehicle definitely falls into the category of ‘if you have to ask how much, you are probably at the wrong dealership for your family budget.’

“In the classic car arena, the leading edge vehicles of the day are always the most highly sought after and prized specimens. Yet it is that very leading edge styling, technology, engineering, manufacturing, basically whatever it is that makes the vehicle so desirable, that also makes them such (pains) to restore and maintain.

“As I research these new cars each week with all of their latest gizmos, watchamacallits and seating materials (anyone remember ‘fine Corinthian leather’?), I cannot help but wonder how much of that technology will even be around for the usable life of the vehicle.

“Every manufacturer is looking for that special something, unique to their brand and I can certainly appreciate that. It will be very interesting to see what technology has survived and is still available in the form of restoration services and parts
when today’s newest technology wonder cars become tomorrow’s highly sought
after benchmark design classic.”
