CANTON, GA.: David Anderson wrote: “Acuras in recent years have suffered from the same malaise as its parent company cars, Honda. The public and in particular, the automotive journalists consider them boring, stylistically safe cars without a unique identity to warrant the premium price.

“Witness the fact that the RL (the sedan the RLX replaces) is not in the current model year lineup and last year, less than 1,000 of that model were sold in the US.

“Do you remember the credit card TV commercial where the couple sit down to dinner and the woman tells the guy, ‘You’re boring… boring, boring, boring.’? Well Honda has finally been left stranded and alone at the sales table enough times that it is that guy going about remaking and reshaping itself.

“After having to perform a whirlwind redux of the Civic lineup to stem a blood-letting at the hands of its much more inspiring competition, Honda has just introduced a smartly restyled Accord and from that we now have the RLX.

“The Acura stylists are working hard to disguise, cover and alter the Honda DNA from which all Acuras originate, but at the same time they want to keep some of the familiarity of a trusted brand.

“As the American brands can certainly attest, it is a very hard-learned lesson to ask the buying public to part with more of their hard-earned cash for a premium offering that is nothing more than a rebadged lesser brand.

“The RLX appears to be an a much needed course correction for the brand, with only the roof line being only a slight hint at its Accord roots. Sporting unique ‘Jewel Eye LED’ headlights and equally unique styling inside and out, this RLX is certainly more inspiring than its predecessor.

“This model even has PAWS, Precision All-Wheel Steer. From an engineering perspective, AWS is actually a throwback to the 1980s that every manufacturer gave up on rather quickly. In practical use by the average consumer, this was technology for which no one saw the benefit and all it did was add to the initial and long-term cost of the car. It remains to be seen if the technology has progressed enough to stay around this time.

“With a base price just under $50,000 and around $60,000 for the even more premium model, I guess the buying public will let Honda/Acura know if their effort is worth the asking price.”
