The Pinch: Georgia Power offers rebates, incentives for customers

The summer months are just heating up, but if homeowners think ahead to winter, they could save hundreds in their annual home energy costs.

Georgia Power is offering customers a chance to earn up to a $400 rebate by replacing a gas furnace with an energy-efficient electric heat pump. The offer is good through Aug. 31.

Customers can receive a $400 rebate for converting from a natural gas furnace to a 15 SEER or higher heat pump, or they can get a $200 rebate for converting from gas furnace to a 13-14.9 SEER heat pump.

More than 50 percent of a monthly utility bill goes to heating and cooling costs. A high-efficiency heat pump can save up to $300 a year on heating and cooling. The estimated heating and cooling costs are based on a 2,146-square-foot home, according to Georgia Power’s Web site.

To receive the rebate, the homeowner must be a Georgia Power customer. Installations must be made by Aug. 31 by participating HVAC dealers. For more information, call (800) 524-2421, ext. 950, or visit
