Paine suspect appears in court

The suspect in Monday’s Paine College shooting made his initial appearance in Richmond County Magistrate Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Xavier D. Cooper, 20, faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm at school, crimes that carry a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison.

Cooper is accused of shooting fellow Paine College student, 21-year-old JaJuan L. Baker, in the head at 1 p.m. Monday in Haygood-Holsey Hall.

Wednesday the judge went over all of the rights afforded to everyone accused of a crime. The judge explained to Cooper that he would not address bond.

Because of Cooper’s arrest history, bond can only be set by a Superior Court judge.

Baker is still hospitalized in critical condition, according to the judge.
