Sinkhole temporarily closes Walton Way lane

A sink hole on Walton Way near the intersection with Russell St. as seen on Thursday afternoon.

City officials closed the eastbound right lane of the 2000 block of Walton Way near the Russell Street intersection Thursday while they repair a sinkhole in the road.

Drivers should avoid the area by using Central Avenue or the Calhoun Expressway, according to a news release from the Augusta Engineering Department.

Augusta Traffic Engineer Steve Cassell said the repairs should be completed by Monday, although the department’s news release estimated Thursday.

Cassell said the sinkhole is a result of a storm pipe that collapsed, but it’s hard to tell what caused the pipe’s damage.

“It could be anything,” he said.
