One dead, two injured in Burke County accident

One man died and two others were hospitalized after an accident Saturday morning in Burke County, authorities said.

Around 1:30 a.m., a 2001 Pontiac Firebird was traveling east on McManus Road near Hephzibah when it crossed both lanes and landed on it’s side against a tree, Georgia State Trooper Chris Calhoun said.

Dustin Durham, 20, was in the backseat of the car and was killed.

Robert Taylor, 22, and David Jackson, 18, were both thrown from the vehicle. According to the initial investigation, Calhoun said it looked like Taylor was the driver. He is in critical condition at Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Jackson is also in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

A fourth man, Michael Collins, 20, was treated and released.

From the initial investigation, Calhoun said they suspect alcohol was involved. The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team has been called in to look into it further, Calhoun said.
